Randy Merrill

Randy Merrill

Music has followed Randy all his life. When it came time to pursue a career, Randy chose music production as the place to make his mark. Attending the renowned Sound Recording Technology program at SUNY College at Fredonia, Randy immersed himself in equal parts of conservatory style music studies, audio engineering, math, science, and the study of acoustics.

It was during this period that Randy experienced the whirlwind of multi-platinum record production as the assistant engineer for producer Armand Petri (Goo Goo Dolls). Petri was producing The 10,000 Maniacs and Sixpence None the Richer, exposing Randy to a larger world that would capture his imagination and spur him on to bigger and better projects throughout his career.

After Fredonia, Randy went on to work for the prestigious Eastman School of Music. At this world renowned conservatory, Randy honed his skills on all phases of music production from live and studio recording and mixing, to live sound reinforcement, jazz arranging, composition, and percussion performance. He draws upon this experience everyday in his mastering.

It was in 1999 that Randy moved to his new home in New York City, taking an engineering position with keyboardist and producer, Steve Gaboury (Suzanne Vega, Cyndi Lauper), at Livewire Production and Recording.

Looking to further diversify his already wide range of skills, Randy delved into technical engineering, moving to the famed Avatar Studios (formerly known as Power Station) (www.avatarstudios.net) where he stayed for the next five years. Randy worked directly under Chief Engineer, Roy Hendrickson, a prodigious combination of recording engineer and electronics designer. Randy was also instrumental in the construction of Avatar's own mastering facility, Kevorkian Mastering.

It was through his relationship with Fred Kevorkian that Randy gained an appreciation for mastering and made the decision to pursue it as a career, an obvious utilization of all his skills and experiences.

In March 2006, Randy joined Scott Hull Mastering as Scott's production engineer ultimately leading to the development of his own mastering style and client list.

As a mastering engineer, Randy strives to learn what the artist intends to accomplish through their music, both esthetically and practically. He takes the time to understand the artist's influences and which aspects of the recording they like and dislike. Randy knows that every project is as unique as the artist who produced it

I look forward to mastering with Randy Merrill, He does a tremendous job and brings out the very best in my work.
