Scott Hull

Back before there were compact discs.....

Scott Hull got his start in mastering through Bob Ludwig in 1984. Finding a home at Masterdisk as Bob's assistant and Digital Editor, Scott immersed himself in the trade until 1993 when Bob left to open Bob Ludwig's Gateway Mastering In Maine.

"Bob was a wonderful teacher. He showed me the humanity of mastering and taught me to rely on my ears when in doubt", says Hull of his former mentor.

For the next 7 years Scott took over as chief engineer and IT specialist at Masterdisk spending, when all was said and done, nearly 15 years at the venerable mastering house. During his tenure, Scott had the honor of mastering the legendary Donald Fagan's Kamikirad as well as some highly influential records like Garbage 2.0, Shaun Mullins' Lullabye, and the non-stop rocker, Spacehog's In the Meantime.

"At that point it was time to strike out on my own. I moved my mastering operation to Classic Sound, assembled my own room full of analog and digital mastering gear and mastered Grammy winner Steely Dan's Two Against Nature and John Mayer's Room For Squares. It was a wonderful time in my career and taught me those things you can only learn in a trial by fire situation."

While at Classic Sound, Scott also gave his signature sound to many other major label and independent records as well as a host of influential Jazz and contempory music recordings, singer songwriter projects and world music. Then one day a call came from Troy Germano that led Scott to The Hit Factory where he stayed until they closed the doors forever in 2000. While there, Scott gave his attention to notables such as Amy Grant , Skillet, Edie Brickell, and John Zorn to name a few. What followed was a rather short but very busy stop at Jigsaw Sound.

"I set up my mastering operation there intending to stay a while. But within only a few months the situation that I had been looking for presented itself."

New beginnings...

In late 2005, Scott met with his destiny in the form of Scott Hull Mastering. Capitalizing on the opportunity to own a piece of the rock, Scott and the crew moved the operation to its current location in the heart of mid-town, Manhattan. Scott Hull Mastering is not simply another base of operations for Scott - this is home. Set up as a full-featured, professional mastering facility, SHM is where the new class of artist go to get the sound only Scott, with his decades of experience, can bring to a project. History is made in such places.
